This is my least favorite week of the whole school year.
Yes, school will finally be over tomorrow, but the school carnival doesn't close until Saturday night. I know it's a major fundraiser for the school, but I seriously hate the carnival.
My kids love the rides, which seem to get more and more rickety every year. Two of the kids are old enough to enjoy the carnival in the company of a large pack of friends, but we insist that our eight-year-old be accompanied by a parent. That means that my husband and I have to spend at least one evening during this week trailing a small, impatient child who isn't interested in waiting on line for any ride, no matter how good it looks.
In a way that's a relief for me, since I've discovered that standing near the exit gate of these rides affords me plenty of time to see the rust and hear the squeaking, banging and squealing of the motors and gears. Then I wonder how long it's going to be before something (or someone) falls off.
With the amount of times per year that these rides are assembled and dismantled, there's got to be a lot of wear and tear on them. I'd really prefer spending the money at an amusement park that stays in the same place all the time!
