My younger son's second year of "machine-pitch" baseball is now over. Not a moment too soon, as far as I'm concerned, because I'm not a big fan of baseball.
What I will miss is watching the little kids play baseball. That's way more entertaining than the game itself.
Besides observing my son wiggling his tooth in the outfield, I found plenty of other funny stuff to occupy me during these very slow games. They were made even slower by the fact that they're making the first three innings "kid pitch," which meant that the teams were scoring insane amounts of runs because of walks, and innings would end after the entire lineup had a chance to bat--but maybe only one child got an actual hit. (Three were hit by the ball, and all the rest walked.)
Puddles in the infield made for great entertainment for kids and parents alike. One little boy abandoned his post at second base in favor of tossing handfuls of mud into a puddle behind the pitcher's mound. No amount of reminders from the coach could keep him at his assigned position, because mud was available, and what could be better than mud?
Another young outfielder put his back to the action and sang and danced his way through several innings. Maybe he was practicing for the school talent show--who knows? He was happy, and that's all that mattered.
In the end, it seemed like the best part of baseball was the snack at the end of the game and the pizza party after the final game. But the kids had fun, regardless of the score. Nobody kept score anyway.
