We have a finished area in our basement that my husband had been using as an office. It also doubled as a guest bedroom, in a pinch.
But my husband has been working at his laptop at the dining-room table rather than the office lately; he says there's not enough room to work at the desk down there. So while we've got some business equipment such as our printer/copier/scanner, the shredder, and the files downstairs, the actual work is getting done elsewhere.
That leaves a perfectly good room unused--but not for long.
My teenage son knows a good opportunity when he sees it. He moved his guitars out of his bedroom and into the basement, set up his special-effects pedal and amplifier, and brought out the electric keyboard. When he borrowed an electric bass from a family friend, that went downstairs too. Add a bar stool and a music stand, and he's got his own mini-music studio in our basement.
It gets a little loud down there sometimes, and I don't need to turn on any CDs or radios up here when he's in the basement--because the sound travels right through the heating vents into the living room.
It sounds like my husband is out of the office, at least until college starts.
