My mom has always been a huge baseball fan.  At some point she started collecting things like signed baseballs and autographed books by her favorite players.  And when my sister moved out after getting married, Mom took over her room and turned it into what we called "The Shrine."

She even had a blue-and-white pinstriped sofa in there to complement the baseball posters, pictures, and other paraphernalia.  Her prize possession was a baseball that had several signatures on it--anytime she or anyone she knew was going to an event where a baseball player would be, that baseball would be there too.  It was precious to her, and probably priceless.

One day my parents' house was robbed; all they got was some jewelry and some of Mom's favorite baseball items.  Among them was her special baseball.  We checked ebay for months afterward, hoping it would turn up somehow.

Mom seemed to lose her interest in collecting after that point, but I've been noticing a few baseball-themed items in her family room lately--mostly posters and such, nothing valuable, but things that remind her of her favorite sport.

Recently I discovered that there's a company that makes coffins with logos for all the major-league baseball teams.   Mom's got all her, um, final arrangements planned.  I wonder if there's a New York Yankees coffin on that list...
