We've really got to get better at do-it-yourself home repair over here.
The other day I was a "prisoner in my own home," waiting for the plumber to show up.
The kids had discovered that the drainpipe under the kitchen sink was draining right into the bucket of recyclable cans and bottles that sits in that cabinet.
Fortunately there was no water damage; the only things that got wet were some empty Dr. Pepper cans.
Of course, my husband was away on a multi-day business trip when we discovered the problem. So I called the plumber, and was given a four-hour arrival window--two days later.
That window came and went with no sign of a plumber. It was getting close to dinnertime, and my kitchen is so small that if someone's working in the sink area, no one else is getting close to the stove. Meanwhile, I'd been washing pots and pans in my basement utility sink for two days.
At 5:30 I figured it was time to give up. The kids were wandering around bugging me about what time dinner would be ready. Just as I walked into the kitchen and started pulling ingredients out of the refrigerator, my teenage son stopped me: "The plumber's here."
Of course.
