My son's Cub Scout pack recently hosted its annual Pinewood Derby.
This is one of the most-anticipated events of the Cub Scout year. The young racecar enthusiasts design and paint their own cars, cut from blocks of wood. Their dads or grandpas figure out how to place weights on the cars so that they won't be too heavy (there are rules about this) and so that the car has a good chance of winning the race.
Of course, there's always the question of whether the car will finish the race. Just like real racecars, pinewood racecars have plenty of trouble with tires. However, it's not like we have a NASCAR-style pit crew sitting alongside the racetrack. While there are always a few spare wheels and "axles" (special nails), that's about all that can be done at race time. But a car that loses a wheel can manage to disqualify another car as well, if it jumps the track and runs into another car.
Last year my son included a "driver" in his car, but he soon discovered that it wouldn't stay attached. He's probably the only Cub Scout to have managed to include an ejector seat in his design.
