If you don't want people to know your beauty secrets, make sure you take care of your beauty routine at home.
Recently I read a couple of different newspaper columns on the subject of putting on makeup at restaurant tables or the subway.
And while I'm certainly no etiquette expert (elbows on the table, anyone?) I'm inclined to agree with the ones who say that these are not the places to get beautiful.
I remember my grade-school days, when everyone went around with those giant, wide-tooth combs in their back pockets--the better to keep that feathered-back hairstyle looking perfect. We'd drive teachers crazy when we took out those combs during class.
When I became a teacher myself, the sight of other teachers refreshing their lipstick at the lunch table wasn't something I wanted to see while eating my own lunch.
As to putting on makeup in the car, bus, or subway: that's risky, at best. A sudden stop is going to really create a mess. Are you prepared to handle that?
My sister and I carpooled to high school for two years with another student whose mom would walk out of the house each morning carrying a makeup kit the size of a fishing-tackle box. Bare-faced when we left for the day, she'd be fully made-up (eyes and all) by the time she dropped us off at school. Now there's a distracted driver!
It's great to be beautiful--but nobody wants to see you make it happen.
