It may be the end of the line for our pop-up toaster. 
That toaster doesn't owe us anything. It's over twenty years old; my husband had it in his apartment before we even met each other. For a long time it sat in a box in the basement as we used a toaster oven for most of our toasting purposes. But the toaster oven we have now is not very fabulous at making toast. It's fine for small frozen pizzas and the like, but toast comes out black on one side and white on the other--not the desired effect.
My eight-year-old is a big fan of toast. He'll eat up to six slices of buttered toast each day for breakfast. So when the toaster suddenly decided to burn all the toast, even though no one had changed the setting for how dark the toast should be, that was a problem. It seemed that the pop-up mechanism on the toaster had suddenly given out.
I know one thing for sure: if we do end up buying a new toaster, I'm the one going shopping for it. If I leave it to my husband and two sons, they'll come home with the Star Wars toaster pictured here--and that does not match my kitchen décor!
