Even before my older son took over the home office and turned it into a music studio, I didn't use that room to work from home.
Part of the reason was that the room is cluttered with various Cub Scout paperwork, awards, and Pinewood-Derby car parts, as well as my husband's miscellaneous business supplies. 
And part of the reason is that the home office, located in the basement, is too remote from the rest of the house.
I am Mommy; I multitask.
While it would be far more convenient for me to keep up on laundry if I worked in the basement, my desk has become a fixture in the living room. That means I can keep an eye on the baking, answer phone calls, get the mail within 5 seconds of it hitting the mailbox, and ignore the dust that accumulates on shelves and picture frames. (I don't generally dust, or ask the kids to do it, until someone writes their name in the dust on the top of the coffee table.)
It's nice to work in the living room, since I can bring my laptop to the couch and put my feet up. But having a desk in the living room is not always so nice. Who wants to come in here and see my piles of paper, including school notices, mail, coupons, and my planner, as well as the basket of miscellaneous cables, adapters and receipts that's overflowing onto the desk? It seems that clutter expands to fill the desk available, which is why I'll never agree to getting a larger desk.
However, with all that clutter on the desk, there's no room for the dust to gather. I've got to find the silver lining somewhere!
