My living room looks like a music store exploded in here.

In this corner:  an amplifier and extension cord.

In that corner:  an acoustic guitar.

Under the coffee table:  another acoustic guitar.

Near the window:  an electric bass.

Leaning on the couch:  a banjo.

On my desk chair (until I moved it so I could sit down to write):  a mandolin.

In the middle of the floor:  a music stand.

I should just give up and call it the conservatory.  I thought my teenagers were using the basement office for that purpose, but they seem to have abandoned that idea in favor of having a captive audience at all times.  The electric guitar, for the moment, is still somewhere else in the house.  However, I expect that it will migrate to the living room any day now.

The bass isn't ours, but my son wishes it was.  A family friend is letting him borrow it, and he's hooked.  Truth be told, so am I--but it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.  I can play it just fine unless I've just put down my guitar; at that point, I have trouble making the transition.  So much for musical multitasking.  My son can put down the bass and pick up a mandolin, going from one extreme to the other, without batting an eye.

All we need now is a drum set and a multi-colored bus.  I'd definitely need that "Caution:  Nervous Mother Driving" sign too!
