We recently discovered that susceptibility to poison ivy has passed down to the next generation.
My dad, and both my siblings, are very sensitive to poison ivy. And it looks like at least one of my kids (as well as my sister's kids) have inherited this sensitivity.
My dad has been known to contract poison ivy by mowing the lawn a few feet away from the vines. He thinks it's carried on the wind. Once he gets it, he'll spend the next two weeks washing with Octagon soap and coating his rash in pink Calamine lotion.
My daughter and her friends went down the same road recently when they went wading in a local creek. Although one of the kids on this expedition has spent a good chunk of his life exploring the woods of northern Pennsylvania, he's apparently a poison-ivy magnet. It found him--and my daughter, who sat down in it. Wearing shorts.
My sister clued me in to the best remedies for my itchy kid (Dad's old reliable Octagon soap wasn't doing the job) but my daughter still has the scars on her legs. She hasn't been back to the creek in weeks, and neither has her hiking buddy.
