If it's not raining, there's a good chance that a bunch of young teenage boys is riding around on their bicycles in front of my house every afternoon.
I'm pretty sure they're trying to impress my daughter and her friends with their bike-riding talents.
I can't look. And I hope my eight-year-old isn't looking either, because these guys are hardly the poster children for Bicycle Safety.
Most of them are Boy Scouts, but I'm not banking on them earning the bicycling merit badge anytime soon. There's not a helmet in the bunch. All of them ride bikes that are sized for eight-year-olds rather than eighth-graders. They're riding backwards, popping wheelies, and jumping the curb.
They're also narrowly escaping traffic on my street, which may be a side street but sees its share of cars in the after-school hours.
So when I see that they're here, I wave out the front window--and then I go hide in the kitchen, because that overlooks the backyard. I've got a phone handy so I can speed-dial 911 if needed, and my fingers are crossed that I won't have to.
