It's that time of year again--I'm finding flip-flops, instead of sneakers, all over the house.
I'm really not sure why I bother buying shoes for the kids. It seems like they never wear them anyway; I'm always tripping over shoes in the unlikeliest of places. I don't trip on my own, since they don't leave my feet until bedtime.
Flip-flops are not just pool shoes anymore. They've gone so mainstream that my son's school principal explained to the senior-class parents, "Ladies may not wear beach-style flip-flops with their cap and gown to graduation. I'm told that there is another kind of flip-flop that they can wear, but I didn't know there was another kind. I'm guessing that if you have a daughter, you do know this, so I'm leaving it to you."
Yes, there is another kind; in fact, I let my daughter get a pair to wear for her own graduation. They're delicate white flip-flops with a little silver embellishment and a kitten heel. Definitely not beachwear, and definitely cute. She's happy because they're flip-flops. I'm happy because they don't have four-inch stiletto heels.
