Are you a neat cook, or a messy cook?
I love to cook, but I'm not so fond of the cleanup.
I'd probably make a lot more complicated meals than I do if I didn't know that at the end of dinner there would be a pile of pots, pans, bowls and knives to wash.
There's always the option to assign the Big Kids the dreaded dishwashing chore, but I tend to exercise that option more often on the evenings when I know I've got something to do after dinner, so I won't have to come home to a mess two hours later.
But I have developed the skill of cleaning up as I go. Before I start making dinner, I make sure that any other dishes that have gathered during the day are either in the dishwasher or hand-washed. Then I get a sink full of hot soapy water so I can clean up some of the prep utensils and bowls as I work.
Sometimes that means that on the kids' dish night, they only have two pots to wash--and still there's complaining. I admit to being tempted to work a little messier on those nights, so they'd see exactly what's being done for them. Maybe then they'd be happy to only have two pots to wash.
