I can't find my map.
I have had this amazing spiral-bound map book of the three-county area where I live. It would have come in very handy right now, since my daughter's track team travels to meets that are up to one hour away.
Why not just use the GPS? Well, to be honest, it's because that thing has betrayed me.
There I am, driving along a multi-lane state highway, following the advice of my GPS that tells me to "enter the roundabout in 400 feet." But the traffic circle that used to be there was eliminated over a year ago. The first time I approached this intersection, I blew right by the exit I should have taken, because I was looking for that traffic circle up ahead.
The GPS also has a very annoying habit of routing the trip along the shortest route. But the shortest route is not necessarily the fastest route. Just because it cuts 10 feet off the trip doesn't make it faster, especially if it adds 25 traffic lights.
So if you're driving with me on the way to a Saturday-morning track meet, you might hear the following conversation:
GPS: "In 400 feet, enter the roundabout."
Me: "You can't make me go that way. There is no roundabout."
GPS: "Recalculating..."
Yes, I talk back to the GPS. If only it would listen.
