Philadelphia has earned a reputation as a city with some really tough fans. Whether they're boo-ing Santa Claus or (as happened recently) vomiting on children in the stands,
fans of pro sports in Philly have been known to cross the line at times. They've even been encouraged by then-mayor Ed Rendell, now governor of Pennsylvania, to toss snowballs onto the football field. Some may argue that the fans need little encouragement to behave like that, but you have to wonder why Rendell would instigate that kind of thing.
Let's just say that we're "Phanatics" about sports around here. Last year when the Phillies were making strides toward competing in the World Series, my kids' school PTA promised the students an ice-cream treat if the team won the pennant.
Judging by the numbers of kids I see wearing Phillies t-shirts to the school-bus stop each day, poor fan behavior hasn't deterred anyone from cheering for their favorite teams. My own eight-year-old is right there, root-root-rooting for the home team with all his friends. He gets mad when the home games are blacked out on local TV, and begs me for the sports page each morning so he can read up on the Fightin' Phils' progress.
But judging by what happened in the stands during the ring ceremony following the 2008 World Series win, the team might want to rethink that "Fightin'" moniker. It doesn't look like some fans need much encouragement to punch each other out.
