Summer vacation season is coming up, and you know what that means:  it's time for your inbox to be flooded with invitations to view all your friends' travel photos.

It used to be that people would take slides of their vacations and then subject family and friends to a larger-than-life show projected on a blank wall in their homes.  In the '60s, that was as high-tech as it got.  And if you wanted to avoid the scenes of Great-Aunt Ruth on the beach, all you had to do was decline the invitation.

But now those pictures come to you whether you want to see them or not.  My inbox delivers links to photos my friend's kid's tee-ball games.  I know exactly one child on that team.  Another friend sent me a link to her pictures of her recent trip to Colorado.  I clicked on that one, figuring I'd get to see some beautiful scenery.  But I got 5 pictures of the Rocky Mountains and 5 pages of pictures of the friends she visited out West.

And then there's facebook, where people with iPhones can post minute-by-minute shots of their vacations.  The other day, someone I know drove to Florida with her family.  Every time they crossed a border into another state, facebook knew about it--because she posted a picture of each and every "Welcome to (insert name and nickname of state here)" sign as they passed it.  I hope she wasn't the one driving the minivan.
