It's been a long time since I went to a movie theater to see a film, and I imagine that the last time I did this,
the movie involved either SpongeBob, Pokémon, Shrek, or Harry Potter. So when I visited a theater last week, I was buying tickets for yet another kids' movie.
My younger son took four friends to see How to Train Your Dragon in lieu of a more conventional birthday party. As birthday parties go, it was a piece of cake. We bought the boys two buckets of popcorn to share and a drink for each one. Then my husband and I hemmed the kids in by sitting on opposite ends of the row in the theater. These multiplex theaters are getting smaller and smaller; our party of seven only left one open seat in the row, and the theater only had one column of seats.
That also means that the big screen has shrunk. Some of my neighbors have TVs almost as big as the screen we viewed that movie on. Really, if you like watching movies on the big screen, it's probably worth it to buy the biggest TV you can fit in your house and wait for the DVD. The experience will be similar, and the popcorn and soda will be way cheaper.
Not like the boys shared any of that pricey popcorn with me, anyway.
