I keep a list a mile long of books I want to read. Since that list is so long, though, it takes me quite a while to work through it. Very often, by the time I get the chance to read the books on my long list, I've forgotten why I wanted to read them--or how I heard about them in the first place.
Was the book recommended to me by a friend, or by my mom? Mom's a big reader too, and she's clued me in to many wonderful novels. And several friends of mine share book recommendations with me as well.
Maybe I read a review of it in a newspaper or magazine.
Perhaps I heard it mentioned on a radio show; I might even have listened to an interview with the author.
When I enjoy a book, if it was one that was recommended to me by a friend or family member, I like to let that person know what I thought of the book. (That also encourages people to keep cluing me in to great reads--yes, I've got an ulterior motive.) But how can I thank someone for recommending a book I've read and enjoyed if I can't remember who told me about it in the first place?
I guess it's time for me to start adding something else to my list--how I heard about the book. It'll make it easier when it comes to thanking the person who told me about it. And, since I love to give books as gifts, it will help me to remember not to give a copy of a certain book to the person who recommended it to me in the first place.
