Now that spring weather is here, it's a good time to think about doing some painting projects that will spruce up our home. The main rooms of the house (kitchen, living room, dining room, family room and hall) all need a fresh coat of paint, though I'm happy with their present colors and don't plan on making any changes to that.
But the front door is, at the moment, a blank slate. We never did paint that door when we had it installed two years ago. It's "Primer Off-White" right now. And part of the reason is that I'm having trouble narrowing down what color I want to paint it.
A light color, like white, is only going to attract dirt, especially since I have kids who bounce basketballs in the foyer and have generally grubby hands. And the color I choose for the door (and the shutters in the upstairs windows) shouldn't clash with the pale yellow siding and red bricks on the house itself.
Then I have to consider what color my neighbors' front doors are. Wouldn't want to stand accused of being a copycat, you know. A quick run out to the front yard reveals that the 6 homes closest to mine have camel or white front doors. So it looks like the choices are wide open.
My husband wants me to take my daughter with me to the home-improvement store when I go to pick up some paint-chip cards. I'm not sure that's such a great idea, since my daughter insisted, late last spring, that her bedroom be painted blaze orange. I don't know how she can sleep in a room that bright--and boy does it heat up in the summertime! So I doubt that she'd be willing to let me walk out of there with paint samples in sedate colors like denim blue or forest green.
Then again, I could just give in to indecision and leave it "Primer Off-White" for yet another year.

red is a good front door color - darker, not bright
