Yes, I know it's not May yet, but gardeners everywhere are getting ready.

Recently, my son's Boy Scout troop held its annual mulch sale fund-raiser. They make enough money on this sale to fund the cost of their monthly weekend camping trips for the whole year, so the boys only have to pay about $20 per camping trip to cover the grocery bill. The sure sign of spring around here is the pile of bags of mulch waiting to be spread out in our flower beds.

My friend, who loves gardening, ordered quite a bit of mulch for her large yard.  These bags weigh about 50 pounds each, and while the Boy Scouts deliver the mulch to your home and will place the bags wherever you want them, the homeowner still has to spread out all that mulch in the right spot.  So she had a big job to do.  And she's got a puppy that likes to help her do big jobs like that.  Not only did her puppy taste-test the licorice-root mulch, he also hitched a ride on a bag as she dragged it across the yard.

Fortunately, the only gardening helpers around here are of the two-legged variety.  I'm hoping that this year we'll have some decent-looking flower beds--and it's going to take more than some bags of mulch to achieve that.
