Ever since we moved into this house, we've had trouble with the phone service.  After a heavy rain, the line would crackle and then die completely until something--somewhere--would dry out.  I'd spend hours on the phone with customer service, trying to convince them that if they sent a bucket truck over here now, instead of waiting three days for the line to dry out, the lineman could see (or hear) the problem for himself.

What a hassle.  And with all the dollars spent on the "interior wire maintenance" plan which promised that they'd fix phone issues inside the house at no additional charge, and days spent as a prisoner in my own home waiting for a repair technician to show up during the 12-hour arrival window, we decided to dump the landline.

But we weren't ready to go all-cellular, as some of our friends and relatives have done.  All they have is one cell phone, so they carry their home phone with them all the time.  We chose, instead, to try VOIP--using our high-speed internet connection to carry our phone calls.  As long as we've got internet service, we've got phone service.

Overall, VOIP has worked out quite well for us.  There are certainly fewer outages, since our internet connection has proven to be quite reliable.  When an outage does occur, 99% of the time it's something we can remedy at home, simply by rebooting the phone's router.  Best of all, if a storm takes out the telephone lines in the neighborhood, we'll still be chatting!
