I've mentioned that I assist at my daughter's track meets, since grade-school track teams don't hire officials.  There are several jobs to be done, and I've gotten a little experience at the job of "recorder"--writing down every runner's time in every heat of every event.

These track meets last about three hours.  Hello, writer's cramp!

At the first track meet our team participated in, I volunteered for this job.  Our coach was also new to coaching track, so he didn't know exactly what equipment the adult officials would need to do any of their jobs.  He handed me two loose sheets of paper to keep track of all the races in this meet.

Those two papers lasted me all of five minutes.  Fortunately, the recorder from another team was more seasoned at the job.  She had a three-inch binder full of blank score sheets and offered to share these with me.  She also handed sharpened pencils to a recorder from a third team.  After the meet, I showed the coach exactly what I needed--and how much of it I needed--to get the job done.

And tomorrow, I'll be sure not to leave home without a clipboard to keep the score sheets from blowing all over the track.
