You just never know what you're going to find on the front porch. I've always wanted a house with a big 
front porch: a place to sit on a sunny day and read a book or share a pitcher of iced tea with the neighbors.
Then again, when I drive into a neighboring town that is much heavier on the porches than mine is, I rethink the whole front-porch thing. There's one house that has an old refrigerator on the porch. The fridge doesn't have a door, but that's OK--its contents don't need to be kept cool anyway. That refrigerator holds all kinds of small toys like sand pails, bubble soap and sidewalk chalk.
Two blocks away, another home has a dryer sitting on the porch. The first time I passed by, I figured that the homeowners had gotten a new dryer and were waiting for bulk-pickup day to put it out on the curb. Then I noticed the laundry basket on top of the dryer--that machine was currently in service.
If I ever do get a house with a front porch, I promise to stick to flower baskets and wicker chairs!
