Not every parent shares their taste in music with their teens.
But I firmly believe that it's a good thing for parents to listen to music with their kids, to know what music their kids like.
Sometimes that's a difficult thing to do. I don't like all the same music my kids do. But my husband and I impose our musical tastes on the kids when we're in the car, despite their complaints about Dad wanting the country-music station or me wanting the "mellow" classic rock (hey, they play a lot of Crosby, Stills & Nash on that station!) So when they tell me I "need" to listen to a particular son, I let them play it. And it's not always the kind of song I like.
Sometimes, though, it proves to be a lot of fun. A couple of weeks ago, my teenage son came home from school and asked me to check out a band that his friend had just introduced him to: Mumford & Sons. A London-based band with Celtic flavor and late-sixties-rock harmonies, this group had just released an album featuring instruments like guitar, banjo, mandolin and more. It's a little retro, but very different.
I downloaded it after listening to only two songs, and have been enjoying it ever since. Great stuff!

I know what you mean about not always liking your kids music but as a parent you do need to be involved in what your kids listen to. It not always that bad, some things are kind of fun and it kind of an education at the same time
