You could hardly call my home organized--the other people who live in this house are always conspiring against my efforts to keep it that waycubby-organizer.  But it is a goal of mine to have a tidy, organized home.

Whenever I read books or articles about home organization, one common piece of advice always pops up:  keep things where you use them.  That makes a lot of sense.  So why is it so hard to put into practice?

It seems like the first place we decide to put something becomes the only place we can ever keep it.  I remember when I rearranged the kitchen cabinets so that the glassware was in the cabinet next to the refrigerator--it took my family weeks to get used to the change, even when it was a practical one.

Similarly, it has taken me several years of frustration at the inconvenient location of our cordless phone's charging base in the living room before I made a change.  It's a wireless set, so it's not like I needed to keep that charging base near a phone jack.  But we had put it on one table and that's where it stayed.  And all day long when I was at home, working at my desk across the room, I'd have to get up to answer the phone.

Finally, the light bulb went on--I don't have to keep that charging base there.  So now it's right next to my desk, where I can reach it easily while I'm working.
