Today is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and elementary schools all over the country are finding fun ways to celebrate.cat_in_the_hat

My second-grader's class has big plans to enjoy the day.  They'll be reading all their favorite Dr. Seuss books, then voting on which of the books is their favorite.  For math class, they'll make a graph showing how many votes each book received.  As an art project, they'll decorate a T-shirt--and they'll wear their shirts to the school's Read Across America event in the afternoon.  That's when they'll get together with their big-kid "buddies" and enjoy more fun stories and a birthday treat.

I remember when my older son was little; his favorite Dr. Seuss book was Green Eggs and Ham.  We were all pretty tired of "Sam I Am" by the time he grew out of that phase, and I know we were relieved that neither of the other kids was quite so hooked on that book.  My daughter preferred Daisy-Head Mayzie, and her younger brother is a big fan of McElligot's Pool.  (That kid will read anything as long as there's a fish in it!)

Dr. Seuss has helped to bring a love of reading to kids for decades, so I'm glad that the schools have chosen to celebrate his accomplishment with a fun day that centers on my favorite hobby:  reading.
