When the snow finally melted away from the flower bed in my front yard, daffodilsI saw that the daffodils had poked their green tops out of the dirt.  Now they're several inches high and the flowers look like they're ready to bloom.

It's spring!

I'm a big fan of flowers that grow from bulbs, whether they're daffodils, hyacinths or tulips.  Why do I like them so much?  Probably because they grow in spite of my extreme neglect of the flower garden.  These daffodils came with the house, and for the past 12 years I've watched them pop up at the end of every winter, no matter what I have or have not done to that garden all the rest of the year.  They don't care that they're growing up right next to that half-buried, faded, soggy tennis ball that my younger son abandoned there in November.  They don't mind that they're right beneath the bird feeder, getting stomped on by the starlings that fight over sunflower seeds.  They just show up--and for a week or so, I can pretend that I'm not half-bad at this whole green-thumb thing.
