For a while now, I've been fond of Vera Bradley's line of fabric handbags. vera I liked choosing among the many styles and patterns that were available.  When I first got interested in these bags, it seemed to be universally accepted that these were "mom purses"--nobody else would be seen carrying them.

Then, suddenly, I started seeing high-school girls carrying them on their way into school.  My son reported that the school store was selling them (of course, he resented that these took up space better suited to t-shirts and school-logo duffel bags!)

These were "mom bags" no more.

This year for her birthday, friends of ours gave one of these bags to my teenage daughter.  She likes the funky pattern and big pocket it features, and she uses the bag often.  Our friends' nine-year-old daughter mentioned that she has four or five handbags from this designer's line.

You know it's not a "mom handbag" when fourth-graders are carrying them!
