It's raining today, and I can actually see grass in half of my front lawn. The backyard, however, is still pretty buried, and we've still got two-foot-high piles along the curb and the sides of the driveway. I'm still wondering when the 2-week-old snowpile at the curb is going to give up the newspaper that's been missing since our midweek blizzard back on the 10th.
As the snow melts, however, I realize that my yard is once again going to lose its status as a safe haven for the multitude of birds that like to eat from the feeder outside my living-room window. I can't fill it right now because of the rain, but there have been more birds at that feeder than I've seen in a long time. And I have the snow to thank for that.
This is because cats don't like to go out in the snow and cold and hunt for birds when they can stay inside, curled up in a sunny spot. When there's snow on the ground, the neighborhood cats don't visit my Bird Buffet. They don't crouch under the azalea bush and await an opportunity to snatch an unsuspecting sparrow or cardinal.
I'm going to miss this snow!
