I've never been to Mardi Gras, but I have visited the French Quarter. 
Even when it's not February, the music in New Orleans is fabulous. You can stroll through the streets of the French Quarter and hear all kinds of live music pouring out of the open doors of bars, taverns and restaurants.
Or, if you prefer, just listen to the street musicians as you enjoy your chicory coffee and beignets from Café du Monde. They're going high-tech now; the last time my son visited New Orleans, some of the street musicians were selling CDs!
If you weren't lucky enough to travel to the French Quarter for Mardi Gras this year, that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the best of Louisiana music. I downloaded an album by the Cajun band L'Angelus, so I've got the sounds of Mardi Gras right here in my iPod.
