Snow--again! It's got us all dreaming of a vacation, preferably someplace that boasts delicious food.
My kids are all fans of Asian food, so I know they wouldn't protest a visit to San Francisco's Chinatown. However, it's looking like some schools are going to have to be making up some snow days, so there won't be any cross-country travel anytime soon.
What I can do is take them to the Asian grocery store. There's one about 15 minutes away. I can walk in there with $25 and come out with a cartfull of fascinating items. Most of these will be snacks, but I do find some great prices on ingredients like sesame oil, so I stock up on things like that too. They're particularly fascinated by the animal-cracker-like cookies that are printed with pictures of different kinds of trucks, and the name of that truck in English. The translations leave a little to be desired, so the kids get a kick out of that--not to mention that one of the types of trucks in the cookie box is the military tank.
It can be a little challenging to shop in this store, as some items are not labeled in English, so you need to bring along your sense of adventure. This is especially true if you venture into the seafood aisle, where you'll find things like twelve kinds of seaweed, octopus skin and dried fish of all descriptions (just add water?) We won't leave there, however, without a couple of bags of the store's specialty: these giant (10-inch-wide) rice crackers that are made right there.
If the snow would ever stop, we could head out on a field trip!
