Every year about this time, my son's Boy Scout troop goes winter camping. Since we don't live in a climate with moderate winters, the boys don't camp in tents in January. Instead, they go to camps that have cabins equipped with running water and wood stoves.
But they have to keep those wood stoves going all weekend and leave behind enough wood for the next campers to get a fire going--so they spend a good amount of their time outside with axes and saws.
Whenever I think about the Scouts out there splitting wood and hiking in the snow, I can't help but be reminded of one of my favorite movies: Grumpy Old Men. Showcasing the considerable comedic talents of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, this movie centers around the winter sport of ice fishing. Until I saw this movie, I didn't realize that ice fishermen had little cabins that were actually hauled out onto the ice and equipped with some of the comforts of home.
Frankly, though, even if there is a little TV, a comfortable place to sit, and a lantern for light, you'd still never get me out there in the middle of January. Same with winter camping. I don't even think that my Snuggie™ would be enough to keep me warm in those conditions.
