The only time you can count on my daughter to wear matched socks is when she goes to school. 
That's because she wears a uniform.
Any other time of day, she's wearing socks that don't go together by any stretch of the imagination. From the looks of her friends, she is not alone.
In my laundry room in the basement, I have a little clothesline where I hang those "odd socks" until I find the matching one. Almost every sock on that line is my daughter's. The reason I haven't found the matching ones yet is that she didn't wear them. And when I complain to her about this, she just replies, "Mom, you don't have to match my socks."
I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised to discover that there are companies out there that specialize in unmatched socks. There are probably plenty of kids just like my daughter who view this as a fashion statement.
Meanwhile, I'll be thankful that for the next four years, she'll still be wearing a uniform that requires matched socks. This trend drives me crazy!
