A couple of weeks ago I had surgery, and my road to recovery has been just a little slower--and bumpiermandolin--than I expected.

I'm doing my best to follow doctor's orders.  That includes limited time on stairs, limited driving, and no lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk (sometimes even that seems too heavy.)  And that lifting restriction is going to pose a problem in the next few weeks.

Along with my older son, I am a musician at my church, and every Sunday I play my guitar.  It's a 12-string guitar, and it's fairly heavy.  Even if my kids carried the guitar into church for me and just handed it to me to play when it's time, I can't stand there for an hour and play it.  It just weighs too much.

All this time I'd been complimenting myself on learning to play a portable instrument.  Organists can't just pack a pipe organ into the trunk of their minivan and take it on the road.

So I'm thinking it might be time for me to branch out a little.  My son has two guitars and a mandolin (as well as my banjo, but he broke at least one string on that, so it's out of commission).  Mandolins are smaller and even more portable than guitars.  Maybe I can use the extended "couch time" to learn to play a new instrument.

Then again, maybe I'll just sing for the next few weeks.  People will laugh, because I won't know what to do with my hands.  But soon enough I'll be back with my trusty guitar.
