I'd almost rather not think about the fact that my oldest child turns 18 today.
It feels like just last year that I made him that "volcano" birthday cake, with fruit-by-the-foot "lava?" (Looked terrible, but he was thrilled with it.)
Or maybe last year was the time I made him a Game Boy birthday cake.
I've got it--last year was the time he was in first grade and we had all the kids in his class here for a party. Since it was January, the party was indoors. We had a piñata. Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep twenty first-graders away from the one child who has the "piñata stick?"
Let's just say it's impossible. Naturally, one of the bigger, stronger boys was the one with the stick, and a smaller kid is the one who got hit in the head. We had to get out the ice packs and call the injured child's mother.
Maybe if I hang on long enough to these memories of birthdays gone by, I won't have to think about how my son is now old enough to drive himself to celebrate the day with his friends.
Then again, I could celebrate too. He's a good kid, smart and funny. I'm proud of him.
