When I was getting ready for surgery, I received a lot of helpful advice from people who have been there, done that.
I learned that with laparoscopic surgery, there can be a problem with stomach discomfort afterward. Some people recommended Gas-X, but others advocated a more natural remedy: crystallized ginger.
"Just nibble on it," they told me. "You'll feel better within minutes. Ginger is great at settling the stomach."
That sounded good to me. I figured that I'd be taking enough medication without adding more things to the mix. And since I like ginger ale, gingerbread, and ginger cookies, I figured that this crystallized-ginger trick was a good idea.
I had to visit three different supermarkets before I found the ginger at a specialty store with a bulk-foods department. But my helpful friends hadn't told me how much ginger I'd need to nibble to settle my stomach down. So I bought half a pound.
For the record, half a pound is a lot of ginger. It's going to be curing stomachaches around here for years to come, I think.
But it didn't work for me--crystallized ginger has a lot more bite than your average slice of gingerbread. That was some hot stuff. So if no one else around here finds it useful, I'll be googling recipes so I can use up all this ginger.
Next time, I'll go with the Gas-X.
