When my kids were little, I kept the Christmas tree in the playpen.
It's not that I was afraid that the kids would break ornaments. 
I already knew that it was a good idea to put the breakable things high up on the tree.

When my brother was a toddler, the three of us got the bright idea to crawl around underneath the Christmas tree. This had to be after Christmas, because our tree never went up until we were all asleep on Christmas Eve. So there we were, three kids under five, making our way under the lowest branches into the corner where the tree sat. My sister and I made it out of there, but my brother wasn't so lucky. When the tree finally tipped over, he was the only one left back in the corner.
The trunk of that artificial tree snapped in half, and my parents spent the rest of that day putting away whatever ornaments survived the crash--and that was the end of our tree for that year.
