My kids have yet to develop a healthy skepticism about those "As Seen on TV" products. Even my two teens believe that if something has its own infomercial, it's got to be good.
Personally, I figure that if it can't sell itself in 30 seconds, 30 minutes isn't going to do anything for it either. But the power of the infomercial to persuade the viewer is quite impressive. I've been told by my kids that I need cake-decorating kits and pasta cookers, because they would make cooking easier for me. Fortunately, my kids have not told me that I need the Total Gym™ or anything beginning with the prefix "Ab-." Tact is important, especially when you're dealing with the person who makes sure you have hot dinners, clean clothes, and a ride to school when you miss the bus!
I've bought a couple of infomercial products and, while some have not lived up to the hype, I have found two recently that really do perform as promised. One of these is the Snuggie™. I got one for Christmas and it is really nice to sit here in my chilly office corner of the living room and have a way to work and stay warm at the same time. I've also discovered that the Bottle Tops™ are a great way to keep cans of soda from going flat if you're not going to finish the whole thing right away.

As Seen On TV products maybe be over hyped, but that part of the fun. But to be overly-skeptical may not be necessary as a national product will have at least $100,000 invested in it (TV time, production, manufacturing, etc). The producers will have done due diligence to see if it "fills a need."
There are many seen on tv products that are appealing to the masses. The Snuggie has to be the biggest product since Chia Pet.
