, it's time to check those toys twice and make sure they're appropriate for the children who will receive them.
Manufacturers put age recommendations on boxes for a reason. And parents who think that their toddler is "advanced" enough to handle a toy that's labeled for children over 3 may be setting themselves up for a visit to the emergency room with their little prodigy. Very often, toys labeled "not for children under the age of 3 years" means "contains extremely tiny parts." Extremely tiny parts have this annoying habit of winding up in the mouths of little children.
Another reason for age recommendations on toy and game packages is the appropriateness of a toy for a particular age. It may be that a certain toy or game is just too complicated for younger children. It could require prior knowledge, fine-motor coordination, or educational skills that are not developed yet.
My younger son has become quite the football fan, and he recently discovered his brother's old Madden NFL videogame. Despite his brother's warnings that he's "not old enough" for this game, he tries to play it--and gets really frustrated when he can't make things happen the way he wants to. That's when things get ugly.
Don't let your child unwrap something on Christmas that could end up in a temper tantrum--or worse, a trip to the ER. Play it safe!
