Yesterday I ran into my Big Kids' pre-K teacher. She is a wonderful teacher; all the parents of children in her class agreed that it was like being in pre-K with your grandma. 
Preschool with Mrs. H was not all about learning to add and subtract or even write your name. It was about playing together, reading stories, doing crafts, singing, and having fun. I know that Mrs. H gave my kids a great foundation for their years in school by making their first years there a positive learning experience.
When I unpack the Christmas decorations each year, I find the ornaments that my kids made in her class. Even the delicate doily angels have stood the test of time. They're a little crinkled and wrinkled, and the halos are crooked now, but they were made by four-year-olds and that makes them beautiful. I've told my husband that those angels will always have a special place among our decorations, along with the coat-hanger-and-knee-high-stocking reindeer. I'll be hanging those up in our home until the things disintegrate.
