Eight days of celebration--that's what Chanukah is about! This holiday, which began last night at sundown, commemorates a miracle that happened more than three thousand years ago.
It has become a time to celebrate religious freedom and independence.
It also has some pretty fun customs. What other holiday has its very own game? (I'm not talking about the obligatory college-football bowls on New Year's Day; I'm talking about a holiday that has a game made for it.) Even better, you can win coins (real or chocolate) in this game.
And then there's the food. As the miracle remembered at Chanukah has to do with lamp oil that lasted 8 days--more than it should have lasted--some of the more famous Chanukah food is traditionally fried in oil. I'm a big fan of potato pancakes, and if I weren't in such danger of shredding my knuckles while shredding potatoes, I'd even try making them at home.
But the best part of any holiday is togetherness with family and friends. And since Chanukah lasts eight whole days, you still have time to make some last-minute travel plans and make it home before the celebration is over and the latkes run out. Happy holidays!
