For several years now, we've all been living with extra air-travel restrictions.  early-morning-departureSo last weekend, as my older son packed for his Habitat for Humanity trip to Mississippi to rebuild Katrina-damaged homes, he and I were very careful about what he put into his suitcase.  We made sure his shampoo container was under 3 ounces and that he didn't pack any water bottles.

Before we left, I reminded him to check his wallet for his driver's license.

At 4 AM, the students and teachers who were going on this trip gathered at school, where a bus waited to take them to the airport.  As everyone posed for a picture before boarding the bus, one young man mentioned to his parents that he didn't have any ID with him.

The vice-principal was a little distressed at this news, especially when he discovered that the student had lost his school ID two months ago and hadn't bothered to get it replaced.  And the student's mom had to run back home and rummage through her son's room, looking for an ID from a previous school year.  Then she had to bring it directly to the airport--and there was a chance that her son was going to miss the plane if she didn't get there fast enough.

It was close, but everyone made it on the plane with proper ID.  Lesson learned:  always double-check.  And I imagine that the teachers at this school will be hearing from the vice-principal today:  it's time to resume those student-ID checks!
