If you had visited my house on the last few Friday nights, you would have heard some pretty good music.
No, I didn't buy any new CDs. I didn't download any tunes. I just allowed my teenage daughter to invite a few friends over for pizza, snacks, and a movie.
After they ate, they abandoned the movie pretty quickly in favor of playing my kids' guitars.
I was surprised to discover that my daughter has some pretty talented friends! Nobody was singing, but two of the boys--plus my own teenage son--were showing each other how to play their favorite songs. They were really good. And it was cool to see how one boy, who was struggling through very basic guitar stuff during the instrumental-music concert in fourth grade, has advanced to the point where he can play "Don't Stop Believing" well enough to perform it onstage.
The only drawback to the whole thing was that they wanted to play the same song--or part of it--over and over and over and over. Practice makes perfect, I guess.
COUPON TIME
There's a lot worse things that a bunch of eighth-graders could be doing. These kids are invited to my house for pizza and guitar anytime. But if you don't have your own in-house band, you'll have to settle for buying music. Don't pay retail, though--we have some great deals today!
