Recently, my husband suffered a foot injury. Walking on it made it worse, of course, and he finally broke down and agreed to use the crutches we'd purchased two years ago after he hurt his ankle.
Whenever he put down the crutches and sat on a chair, the kids would race to the crutches, because they're better than just about any toy out there. Even the 17-year-old is not immune to the lure of playing with crutches.
This brought back memories of the last time my husband needed the crutches. That time, we also had a walker, borrowed from a neighbor, to help him maneuver into the shower. All the orthopedic equipment that had made its way into our living room provided endless amusement for the kids. My older son began planning the crutches' future use as pole-vaulting tools (should I invest in that personal X-ray machine now?) All the kids enjoyed the walker, even the youngest, who was shorter than the hand grips. The boys figured out how to attach a toy sword to the walker. Meanwhile, the older two were hoisting themselves up on the hand grips and trying to vault over the front of the walker (I definitely need that X-ray machine!) And their little brother resorted to faking an injury so he could have an Ace bandage Just Like Daddy.
