I own a lot of handbags, and in the past few weeks I've been changing purses about as frequently as I change my socks! One bag just doesn't do every job. While taking my older son on college visits, I grab the biggest bag I can find. There are always plenty of papers to be stashed away and a small water bottle to be toted along, as well as the usual contents of my purse. (Yeah, I'll admit that I'm continually guilty of carrying way too much stuff in my handbag.)
The problem with carrying a large bag is that the things we all need most are the heaviest things. My key chains, wallets and cell phones always head straight to the bottom of the bag--even if I leave it on top of all my other stuff. Then when I want to answer the phone, which is probably ringing in the wrong place (like the library) or pay for something or get into my car, I have to dig around in the very depths of the handbag to find those heavy essentials. Meanwhile, light stuff like asthma inhalers, little bottles of Excedrin, and the 950 pens and pencils and Sharpies that always wind up in my purse are floating around on the top, getting in the way of finding the other stuff.
I think I don't need a handbag as much as I need a tool belt or accordion file. Wouldn't those be stylish?
