I saw one of the youngest Cub Scouts (they're called Tiger Cubs) at my kids' school today. "Are you going to Cub Scouts tonight?" I asked him. 
"Yes! It's going to be fun," he told me. I agreed that it would definitely be fun at Cub Scouts tonight.
"I hope we go hiking tonight," he hinted.
Poor guy. We're going to have to burst his bubble on that one. The Cub Scouts meet after dinner, and I don't think they're taking first-graders hiking when it's dark outside. Besides, I'm not too sure that first-graders are really on board with what it means to go hiking. I've gone on walks with my kids before. Now I understand that hiking is different from walking. When you hike, you get to carry a heavy backpack and maybe a stick.
I think the kids are really all about the sticks. Because when you take them on a plain old ordinary walk, they wear out after about a tenth of a mile. "Are we almost there?" they whine as they stop to pick up every fallen leaf, inspect every acorn and throw every rock. At least when they're hiking, with sticks, their hands are too busy for those things.
