Bringing fall color into your garden isn't always easy. You have to work around the appetites of the local wildlife.
Squirrels, rabbits, deer and other animals can really do a number on your plants and flowers.
One fall I received a big, beautiful pot of mums as a gift. The brightly-colored flowers looked great in the flower bed near my front door, and they even survived my clumsy attempt at planting them. Unfortunately, the rabbits who've dug a hole under my backyard shed also thought the mums looked great. I came home one day to find a few bunnies finishing off the chrysanthemum buffet. They had eaten the whole plant: flowers, leaves, stems and all--right down to the ground.
I have the same kind of luck with pumpkins. Every single neighborhood squirrel comes running when I set out pumpkins in the fall. There's no need to get out the sharp knives and carve the pumpkins; the squirrels do it for me.
