While I'll admit to purchasing a few Halloween costumes over the years, many times I've taken another way out.  luke-as-luigi-halloween-2005

No, I didn't refuse my children the opportunity to dress up and wander the neighborhood in the dark, begging for candy.  Halloween is one of my husband's favorite days of the year.  He loves walking around with the costumed kids, greeting neighbors and making sure no one runs out into the street.

But instead of buying pre-made costumes, I've found a few no-sew costumes that were easy to make and generally comfortable to wear.  Some involved nothing but wardrobe, others used toys my kids already had as props.

Mario and Luigi:  for siblings and friends.  Denim overalls, one green t-shirt, one red t-shirt, painters' caps or baseball caps with "M" and "L" written on the front, white gloves, and of course a big fake mustache.

Energizer Bunny:  for a baby girl.  Pink and white overalls and turtleneck, pink winter hat with ear flaps, felt bunny ears glued onto the hat, white pompom pinned to the overalls for a tail, toy drum with "Energizer" logo glued on.

Construction Worker:  for a little boy.  Jeans, flannel shirt, little work boots.  Toy "construction worker" set with tool belt and hard hat.   This was one of the easiest costumes ever and it had years of play value.
