It's definitely autumn. There's a chill in the air, and we're putting away the summer shorts and tank tops in favor of jeans and sweaters. 
It's also that time of year when my neighbors start to make heavier use of their fire pits, chimineas, and wood-burning stoves.
My older son is jealous. He's a Boy Scout, so he's all about the campfire. And he's been bugging me and my husband to buy a fire pit for the backyard so he and his friends can have marshmallow roasts. (For the record, he thinks that chimineas like the one pictured are cool, but they're not so great for marshmallow roasting since you can't access the fire from all sides.)
It's nice to have a fireplace--whether indoor or out--as a way to help heat your home or as a gathering spot for family and friends. But there's one thing about fireplaces that I don't enjoy: the smell! I like to hang laundry on the line. Sure, it's faster to put it in the dryer, but it's nice to get out into the fresh air and just hang up the clothes, enjoying the beautiful weather, the birds, and the changing colors of the leaves. In the fall, though, my neighbors start up the woodburning stove that's the main heat source for their home. Once they do that, the laundry on my clothesline doesn't smell like fresh air anymore; it smells like a campfire. That's fine for Boy Scouts, but not so great for the rest of us.
